Power and Connection Issues
Q1: The unit does not turn on. What should I do?
A: Verify that the power supply is properly connected.

Check that the circuit breaker or fuse is not tripped.

Ensure correct wiring according to the installation guide.

Confirm voltage compatibility (240V).

Q2: The LED indicators are not lighting up. What could be the issue?
A: Ensure proper wiring and secure connections.

Check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker.

Confirm power is reaching the connection terminals.

Startup and Performance Issues
Q3: My well pump still experiences high inrush current when tested with a clamp meter.
A: Double-check wiring connections.

Verify the SoftStart Well Pump is securely grounded.

Ensure the correct model is used for your system (SSWP is for ½ to 3 ½ HP 240v Systems)

You could be getting the benefit of reduced in-rush without the clamp meter being able to detect it.

Most clamp meters cannot detect the in-rush current drop at is happens
in milliseconds. There are special in-rush clamp meters for this type of
testing. If the green light is on and
the pump is working, your unit is working fine.

Q4: My generator shuts down when starting my well pump.
A: Ensure the 240v generator output meets the minimum wattage requirement (typically 3,000 Watts).

Check that the generator is properly grounded.

Q5: My system runs fine on electric grid power but struggles with a generator.
A: Confirm that the generator provides stable voltage without excessive fluctuation.

Reduce the load by turning off other appliances.

Try resetting the generator and restarting the system.

Installation and Wiring Issues
Q6: The system does not recognize the SoftStartWellPump. What should I do?
A: Verify that all connections match the wiring diagram exactly.

Recheck wiring and refer to installation guides.

Ensure the Ground connections are properly installed.

Q7: My Well Pump worked before installation, but now it willnot start.
A: Check for any loose or disconnected wires.

Temporarily remove the SoftStart Well Pump and reconnect the
system to its original wiring to test.

Well Pump Soft Start Installation With Circuit Breaker Panel

FOR 120/240 VOLT WELL PUMPS WITH 2-, 3- OR 4-WIRE CONNECTION.

SoftStart Well Pump™ twistlock wire connectors accommodate 12 and 14 gauge solid wiring.

1. Turn off all power to the pump and confirm it’s off. Never work on live circuits.

2. Confirm well pump is 120V or 240V. If circuit breaker is a double-wide 2-pole breaker (refer to A), then it is a 240V well pump.

3. Locate the wire from the circuit breaker panel going to the pressure switch feeding the well pump.

4. Find a good location on the wall to install SSWP with appropriate screws.

5. Cut the Romex wire near the center of the SSWP box.

6. Strip back approximately 1” of the outer cable sheath.

7. Strip back approximately 3/16” of the coverings on the black and red wires.

NOTE: Electrical code allows black and white wires to be used for 2-pole 240-volt service as along as the white wire is marked with black tape at the circuit breaker.

8. If using 14-gauge solid Romex wire, don’t remove the spring clamps in twist-lock connectors (refer to B).

9. If using thicker 12-gauge solid Romex wire, back the terminal screws out to remove the spring clamps. Then tighten terminal screws onto wires.

10. Assemble the Blue connector to the wire from the Circuit Breaker Panel or Pump Disconnect Switch (shown in diagram).

11. Assemble the Gray connector to the wire going to the pump’s Pressure Switch.

12. Connect the SSWP to the new Blue and Gray connectors that were just wired.

13. Turn power on and check LED Indicator Sequence for proper startup and operation.

To install SoftStart Well Pump™ (SSWP) to 120VAC/15 or 20-amp power source, you must build a power cord with the supplied blue PowerCon twistlock connector and a 15-amp power plug.

1. Turn off all power to the pump. Never work on live circuits.

2. Find a good location to install SSWP with appropriate fasteners.

3. Obtain a NEMA 5-15P male plug (with 3 straight prongs – purchased separately).

4. Obtain 14- or 12-gauge cable to match pump HP size (see chart at left). If plugging into a generator, be sure cable length is long enough to keep generator exhaust way from living areas (max. 25-ft. length if possible).

5. Connect one end of cable wires to NEMA 5-15P male plug. See plug wiring diagram at left (Step 5).

6. Disassemble the BLUE PowerCon connector and connect the other end of power cable wires to BLUE PowerCon connector (shown below). See connector wiring diagram at left (Step 6).

7. Reassemble BLUE PowerCon connector.

8. Measure and cut a second length of power cable to run between SSWP location and the pump’s Pressure Switch.

9. Repeat procedures in Step 6 using the WHITE PowerCon connector (Step 9).

10. Connect other end of WHITE PowerCon connector cable to Pressure Switch.

11. Complete all other pump system electrical connections and test.

I really like the SoftStart Well Pump™ made by SoftStartUSA because it stops my well pump from slamming

Ian M Burke

I really like the SoftStart Well Pump™ made by SoftStartUSA because it stops my well pump from slamming on all at once when it starts up. Right now, this cool device fixes the problem of my lights flickering and my breakers tripping by slowly feeding power to the motor. I also loved how easy it was to plug right into my well house setup, and see the green light turn on. In the future, this will completely change my living experience because it will help me pump my well water on a smaller solar power system.

how easy it was to install the SoftStart Well Pump™

UnpluggedTexan

I really loved how easy it was to install the SoftStart Well Pump™, taking me just about an hour to set up. Before this, my deep well pump used a huge burst of power that pushed my home's solar power system way too hard. Now, it solves my problem by lowering the starting power by up to around 41%, so my equipment doesn't struggle to pump water anymore. In the future, I will be able to easily use a standard gas generator to get water pumping through my faucets if the power goes out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Click to see all FAQs

What does a softstarter do for my well pump?

A soft starter helps your pump start smoothly instead of with a hard jolt. It controls the power flow when your pump turns on, which helps stop breaker trips, water hammer, and motor wear. This means less stress on your pump and a longer life for your system.

Will this soft starter work with my generator?

Yes! This soft starter is designed to work with backup or portable generators. It lowers the startup power surge, so your generator doesn’t overload or shut down. It’s ideal for any home on well water.

Do I need an electrician to install it?

It’s a VERY easy connection, but we recommend consulting a qualified electrician for safety and electrical code requirements. The soft starter connects with basic line-in and line-out wiring and comes with clear instructions. Installations take about 20 minutes once wiring is ready!

How does it protect my pump and electrical system over time?

A soft starter eases your pump up to speed, instead of slamming it with full power. This cuts down on wear and tear, prevents pipe damage, and keeps your motor from burning out. Over time, that means fewer repairs and lower power bills.

What’s the difference between a soft starter and a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive)?

A soft starter is designed to reduce the electrical surge and mechanical shock that happens when a motor starts. It gradually increases voltage, letting the pump ramp up smoothly before running at full speed. Once the motor is running, the soft starter simply passes power through, it doesn’t control speed.

A VFD (Variable Frequency Drive), on the other hand, controls both the voltage and the frequency of the power going to the motor. This means it can adjust the pump’s speed and pressure continuously during operation, not just at startup. Because a VFD already includes built-in soft-start and soft-stop functions, you do not need a separate soft starter when using one.

Simply put - if you have a VFD controller on your well pump, you do not need a soft starter.
