Power and Connection Issues
Q1. Can I use a clamp meter with this product?
No. Clamp meters may not provide accurate inrush reduction results. Due to their methods of measuring current inrush data, Standard Clamp Meters and True RMS Clamp Meters are too slow to capture the high speed current reduction from the SSWP that's happening 120 times per second.
Q2: The unit does not turn on. What should I do?
Answer: Verify that the power supply is properly connected. Check that the circuit breaker or fuse is not tripped. Ensure correct wiring according to the installation guide. Confirm voltage compatibility (120V or 240V).
Q3: The LED indicators are not lighting up. What could be the issue?
Answer: Ensure proper wiring and secure connections. Check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker. Confirm power is reaching the connection terminals.
Startup and Performance Issues
Q4 My well pump still experiences high inrush current when tested with a clamp meter.
Answer: Double-check wiring connections. Verify the SoftStart Well Pump™ is securely grounded. Ensure the correct model is used for your system (SSWP is used for ½ to 1 ½ HP pumps at 120V, or ½ to 3 HP pumps at 240V). You could be getting the benefit of reduced inrush without the clamp meter being able to detect it. Most clamp meters cannot detect the inrush current drop that happens in milliseconds. There are special inrush clamp meters for this type of testing. If the green light is on and the pump is working, your unit is working fine.
Q5: My generator shuts down when starting my well pump.
Answer: Ensure the generator output meets the minimum wattage requirement (typically 3,000 watts). Check that the generator is properly grounded.
Q6: My system runs fine on electric grid power but struggles with a generator.
Answer: Confirm that the generator provides stable voltage without excessive fluctuation. Reduce the load by turning off other appliances. Try re-setting the generator and restarting the system.
If the generator is a contractor/non-inverter generator with unstable power due to high harmonic distortion (THD), the SoftStart Well Pump may not operate properly.
Installation and Wiring Issues
Q7: The system does not recognize the SoftStart Well Pump™. What should I do?
Answer: Verify that all connections match the wiring diagram exactly. Re-check wiring and refer to installation guides. Ensure the ground connections are properly installed.
Q8: My well pump worked before installation, but now it will not start.
Answer: Check for any loose or disconnected wires. Temporarily remove the SoftStart Well Pump and reconnect the system to its original wiring to test.
